Nutrition is a factor that directly affects our physical and psychological health, our productivity, and happiness, at every moment of our lives. An individual who has a balanced diet is generally more energetic and productive, more positive and easygoing; able to resolve problems without surrendering to hopelessness, and more likely to achieve success in every aspect of life.
To have a healthy and productive life and normal growth, each individual needs to obtain energy and nutrients from food in an efficient and balanced manner so that these are optimally utilized by the body. In this sense, balanced consumption of oils is significant: oils play a fundamental role in our bodies.
Certain fatty acids found in vegetable oils are not produced by our bodies; therefore, they must be acquired through diet. These "essential fatty acids" are required for the main functions such as brain development (especially the gray matter), retina and sperm production, synthesis of prostaglandins, cholesterol metabolism, menstrual regulation and prevention of skin permeability. The essential fatty acids are present at a sufficient level in breast milk to support the baby's brain growth while they are found in lesser amounts in infant formula. For this reason, breastfed children can better utilize their potential for intelligence. Fats, one of six essential nutrients, are a must-have for our body. We need fats to function at an optimal level, from our brain power to beautiful skin.
Fats are generally divided into two categories: saturated and unsaturated. Unsaturated fats are usually found in liquid form at room temperature and include sunflower, corn, olive, cotton, hazelnut and canola oils. Saturated fats, such as butter or margarine, are generally found in more solid forms at room temperature. Unsaturated fats are further divided into sub-categories such as monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats.
Rich sources of monounsaturated fats include canola oil, olive oil, hazelnut oil and avocado oil. Polyunsaturated fats include two types: Omega-6 and Omega-3 fats. A fully balanced diet will include both types. Fish, walnut, flaxseed, and other oils enriched with Omega-3 are examples of Omega-3 sources. Sunflower and corn oils are sources of polyunsaturated fatty acids. They are good sources of vitamin E, and vegetable oils do not contain cholesterol.
Saturated fats are found in red meat and fatty meats such as salami, as well as dairy products like cream and butter.
